Chang Jung Christian University (CJCU) is a private university located in southern Taiwan. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, CJCU is committed to developing the God-given gifts and abilities of each student within a culture of love, respect, and service. The university was founded in 1993 but is the outgrowth of a vision that began more than one hundred years earlier with the founding of Chang Jung Senior High School, Taiwan’s first western-style high school, in 1885.
There are currently 52 bachelors programs, 16 masters programs, and 1 doctoral program.
Erren River used to be the most seriously polluted river in Taiwan. It was used to collect waste water from pig farms, discharge from factories, and to treat scrap metal. This river between Taiwan and Kaohsiung was known as the most notorious river. Several teachers at Chang Jung Christian University (CJCU), located by the Erren River, however, cared about this notorious river and inspired students and community residents to form a river patrol team that inspected pollution sources and made reports on improving the river to the environmental protection authority. They also established a river conservation center with the goal of restoring the Erren River. After so much efforts over the past decade, the current water quality of the Erren River has been improved and the ecological system has been restored. Birds and fish have come back to the river. We are very pleased to witness the revitalization of the Erren River. The devotion and efforts of the teachers and students at CJCU should make us feel very proud and honored.
Because, geographically, CJCU is next to Erren River, we have taken on conservation missions and responsibilities. In order to maintain the restoration results of the Erren River and continuously look for improvement and sustainability, more teachers and students from the University in recent years have participated in conservation efforts. With the integration of courses and voluntary services, “hands-on” experiences have been taught to students via “learning by doing it.” Through a collection of diverse projects, concrete actions have been made to get closer to the Erren River. Students are able to learn and reflect on their learning through participation, and they understand their mission of co-existence and co-prosperity with the Erren River. More promises have been made. CJCU’s experiences have been gradually converted into teaching materials for environmental education that have enabled the public to become aware of the importance of the river and ecological conservation. We are writing the history of these efforts to ensure that its story will be known.
