History of CJCU

1865
I In 1865, missionary Dr. James Laidlaw Maxwell from the British Presbyterian Church arrived in Tainan to practice medicine and do missionary work. As well as bringing the Christian faith to Taiwan, he introduced modern medical techniques. Beside Dr. Maxwell, missionaries to Taiwan in the early years all valued education greatly. Chang Jung High School, the first high school in Taiwan, was officially founded by these missionaries on September 21st, 1885, and the Rev. George Ede was appointed as the first principal.

1965
In 1965, Mr. Chan Ming-qing (second principal 1954~1963), with the assistance of other board members, founded the first board of directors of Chang Jung's College of Liberal Arts as a first step toward the planned establishment of Chang Jung Christian University. However, this plan was shelved due to a restriction set by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on the establishment of new universities.

1985
In 1985, Dr. Huang Ren-chun succeeded as the fifth chairman of the board of directors. He took office as the MOE lifted its restriction on the establishment of universities, and accordingly immediately set up a university establishment task force, to actively pursue the matter. In July of the same year, Dr. Huang and the principal of Chang Jung High School, Dr. Su Jing-an, went abroad to observe educational systems in the United States and Japan and to visit alumni across the world. As they were sure that both alumni at home and abroad earnestly hoped for the establishment of Chang Jung Christian University, they invited Ms. Liu Kuai-zhi, the chairwoman of Chang Jung Girls High School, to plan for the foundation of “Chang Jung College of Engineering”.

1988

In March, 1988, the board of directors officially proposed a plan to establish a university to the MOE, and started to purchase land. Chi Mei Corporation chairman Xu Wen-long financed the plan with NT 120 million dollars for land purchase. In addition, former head of Gueiren Township Huang Xhao-ming, Director Ma Tian-he from Gueiren Farmer's Association, several public representatives and local resident Mr. Weng Yi-xiong, totaling 35 people, formed the “Preparatory Committee of Chang Jung Christian University”, helping Mr. Lin Bang-mao, former Director of the General Affairs Office of Chang Jung High School, to acquire most

of the land (nearly 60 acres) needed. In June the next year, the proposal was approved by the MOE and “Chang Jung College of Engineering Board of Directors” was organized with the participation of Chang Jung High School and Chang Jung Girls' High School and was firstly chaired by the head of the Chang Jung High School Alumni Organization, Gao Yu-ren.

1992
In 1992, the MOE granted permission to change the name of Chang Jung College of Engineering to “Chang Jung College of Management”. In 1993, Chang Jung officially participated in the University Entrance Examination System and employed Professor Lin Bang-chong as the first president.

1997
In 1997, Professor Jian Chun-an succeeded as the second president. During his term of office, he spared no efforts for the cultivation of humanitarian and professional education, hoping to meet the goal of whole person education. His achievement in service education and art education was splendid.

2000
In 2000, Professor Xiao Long-sheng served as the third president and advanced the plan to change Chang Jung College of Management into Chang Jung Christian University. He addressed himself to realize whole person education, upgrade the quality of education, improve the climate for research, expand the extension education service, set up more departments and institutes and actively look for sources of finance.

2002
In 2002, the school was officially promoted to a full-scale University as “Chang Jung Christian University”.

2003
In 2003, Professor Chen Jin-sheng took over as the fourth president. He leads all faculty and students into a new era with tremendous energy, rules the school systemically, recruits only the talented and insists on full consideration of law, reason and human sentiment in all dealings. He runs the school effectively, vowing to develop Chang Jung Christian University into a top Christian university in Taiwan
