When the former department chairman Dr. J.- H. Chen returned to Taiwan from the U.S. in 1995, he served as a consultant in Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Transportation and Communication. In a coincidental meeting, he spoke to two founders of Chuang Jung Christian University, Dr. Huang Zen-Zhung, Professor Su Jing-An, and the then dean of Academic affairs, Wu- Seng chi, about the ideology behind CJCU and their future goals. After some brainstorming, Department of Occupational Safety and Health was born.
Although industries are upgrading in Taiwan, there is no institution of higher education cultivating professionals in the field of occupational safety and health. Chang Jung Christian University was founded on the Christian spirit of loving people and saving the world. Therefore, the establishment of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health falls in line with the Christian spirit as well as assisting industries upgrade, developing much needed experts in the field, and contributing to our society. Therefore, the University decided to entrust Dr. Chen in planning and organizing the Department of Occupational Safety and Health. After months of preparation, the department was approved by the Ministry of Education at the end of 1995, for participating in the JCEE and enrolling students from the third group (students studying engineering and sciences) for fall of 1996. This is the first Department of Occupational Safety and Health at university level in Taiwan. The goals of the Department are to develop experts in occupational safety and health for each field, to teach the theories and techniques for enforcing industrial safety and hygiene, facilitating a comfortable working environment, preventing occupational hazard and occupational illnesses and ensuring the labor safety and health. The Department set up 2-year extension program in 1997 to provide people in the field of industrial safety opportunities for further education. In 2001, the Department began enrolling ten graduate students each year for the Masters Program. Since 2002, the bachelors program expanded into two classes. In 2003, we began enrolling 20 graduate students for the Masters Program for employed professionals. In the same year, the number of graduate students for the regular Masters Program doubled. The Department plans to offer doctorate program in 2008.
