Erren River used to be the most polluted river in Taiwan. People used to pollute this river, it collects wastes from farms, factory wastes, and even scrap metals. This river located between Tainan and Kaohsiung was infamous because of its circumstances. Located near The Erren River, several teachers from CJCU, cared for this infamous river. They then inspired students and communities to gather a river patrol team to inspect the main source of its pollution and provide feedback reports to the environmental protection authorities. They also established a river conservation center with the goal of restoring the Erren River. After decades of attempts and endless efforts, the water quality of the River has improved and the ecological system has been restored. Birds and fish have been returning back to the river. We are very pleased to witness the restoration of Erren River. The devotion and efforts of the teachers and students had brought us pride and honor.

Because CJCU is located near The Erren River, we have undergone conservation missions and taken responsibilities. In order to maintain the restorations of the river and continuously strive for improvement and sustainability, more teachers and students from the University in recent years have participated in conservation efforts. By integrating voluntary service into courses, we had taught students “hands-on” experience through “learning-by-doing.” Through a range of diverse projects, we are getting closer to Erren River. Students are able to learn and reflect through participation, and understand their mission of co-existence and co-prosperity with The Erren River.. CJCU’s experiences have been gradually converted into teaching materials for environmental education that have enlighten publics the importance of ecological conservations. We are writing these efforts to ensure that this history will be remembered.
